[F500] Runoffs qual

We have been doing a lot of talking about the qualification procedures. The
qualification procedures that are in place allow up to 80 cars to
participate, which is 20 cars more than the 25 cars per mile rule will
permit to run.
With all due respect to the CenDiv participants that don't qualify, the
problem of our participation numbers does not stem from qualifications. It
stems from qualified participants not attending. While CenDiv routinely
sends it's 10 qualified participants (as it should) it really falls to
MWDIV, NEDIV and SEDIV to fill out the participation numbers at the Runoff's
as the tow's from these Divisions are on the order of a day to day and a
half of tow time. The tows from SWDIV, RMDIV, NorPac and SouPac are all in
the two to four day range, one way which is a large investment in time as
well as fuel expense. While the tow fund helps with the towing expense, it
doesn't make it a non-issue.
The week of the Runoff's opens up another expense, lodging and the Mid-Ohio
gouge mentality. If SCCA National could do one thing, and one thing alone,
to help Runoff's participation figures it would be to work to keep lodging
expenses down. With motels in the area charging $90 to $150 a night that
can deplete one racing budget quickly. Of course National could never bring
themselves to help this situation as one of the selling points of the
Runoff's is the impact on the local economy in the form of food and lodging
expenditures by all the participants. Those with motorhomes can laugh at
those figures but you then have to deal with Mid-Ohio's motorhome fee and
the hassle of getting the water and sewage dump trucks to service your
needs. (Ask Don Clar about his fun tracking down the water truck.)
The real problem is not the qualification process, but in getting those that
are qualified to participate!
