[F500] Drive Pins

Anyone have an opinion as to whether the use of drive pins to supplement the wheel studs (bolts!) on our cars hubs are worthwhile.  Is there any appreciable elongation of the holes in the wheels over time?  Reason being, I was drilling the lug holes to the right size in a new set of Real wheels and a racer friend commented that the wheels should either have steel sleeves over the threaded part of the lug that passes through the wheel or the aforementioned drive pins.  I've looked at all my older wheels and on only one noticed the holes were elongated.  Is this overkill?
