The EPA wants to do away with 2 strokes in Snowmobiles and Jet Skis,
therefore, the new F500's will not have 2 stroke motors. This should take
effect in about 2 years.

What, the EPA is considering banning 2-stroke motors for any use?
Jan Schmidt <jschmidt at kumc.edu> wrote:Well, I wouldnt justify it, but it
sounds like the EPA is about to
"justify it" (unfortunately)

A bike motor has a built-in sequential gearbox. You would run a chain
from the gearbox to the axle. No more CVT. A 600cc sport bike motor can
be had for under $2000. A Rotax 494 (complete with carbs, pipes,
clutches) is...considerably more than $2000. A 600cc bike motor has
around 100+ HP. The BIG problem with bike motors is that they have a
tendency to change every year. You may have heard of Formula SCCA? That
started out in life with a Honda 1100cc bike motor. Honda couldn't
guarantee a good supply of those engines so Van Dieman went to the
automotive powerplant. DSR seems to do OK with bike motors. Also F4 in
Canada. There are also several successful bike motor series in the UK
and continental Europe. One will be introduced in the USA in 2004;
Formula BMW. So, it can be done. There seems to be an adequate supply of
Rotax and AMW motors though. So, how would you justify scraping the
current two-strokes in favor of 4-strokers?

While we are on the subject of engines..... A few weeks back, there was
a
discussion of 2 strokes dieing off and replacement possibly being a 4
stroke
4cyl dohc bike motor. My question is this: Our 2 stroke seem to redline
about 8500rpms. These bike motors are more like 12K to 16K rpms. Will
the
cvt trans/clutch setups be compatible with the 4 cyl and will major
adjustments have to be made to gearing. The beauty of our current motors
is
low rpm torque, which the 4 cylinder engines will NOT have. Bill Schmidt
