Ron,
Although you have seen guys strip the teeth off a rubber belt, that is the
result in most cases of poor adjustment.
Of course, if the original design of the final drive area is questionable,
i.e. a small contact area for the belt teeth to contact the gear, that would
cause the problem you're describing also. A chain would help you out if
design is the problem, but keep in mind that a belt is less mass to spin and
in that regard, is more efficient.
Never stripped a belt in ten years of use,

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I'm pretty much a newbie, so I'm
still learning. My Red Devil is running a chain drive rather then a belt.
I've already seen a few guys strip the teeth right off their drive belt, so
I think I'll stick with the chain. Both sprockets and the chain are new
from over the winter, so it looks like I'll be taking clutches apart this
weekend since it sounds like that's where my problem is. The deflection on
the belt seems to be ok.
Thanks again.
