[F500] Nat Course Layout

There was talk a month or so ago that SCCA was considering re-surfacing
the entire solo surface, or building an entire new area seperate from
the current Forbes field. I dont know if that has been resolved as of
yet.

An alternative to better and better rod ends is a
group of f500 drivers to lean heavily on whomever
is doing Nationals course setup.

According to the 2004 Sll Rules, page 45
Course Safety and Layout Rules 2.1.B
...."Dips that could get a car airborne shall not be included."

This is a rule, not a recommendation, it uses the word "shall".

Then again, what is a "dip" and are we really cars? :->

Did anyone get airborne in 2004?
Anything else that might be considered
a "car" besides a F500 get airborne?

With the amount of patching every year,
the North course had been getting better, I thought.
Airborne cars have to be a result of a layout mistake.

I know that we have run both N and S course year after year and
only once every 2 or 3 years do we get a course that does bad things to
our
cars,
so I don't believe this breakage is necessary.

  List,
My 88 Red Devil that broke its front suspension at the 2004 Solo 2
National, uses 3/8" heims in the pivoting part of the front "shocks."
So, when you hit a bump in the road, the end of the round housing of
the
joint takes a real beating. The rounded part of the joint blew out
when
I hit the major fault at Forbes Field, going about 30 to 40 mph. My
big
question is.....Is my car unique in using these wimpy 3/8" joints, or
is
this industry standard? I assume this is what Jay Novak was talking
about when he said chrome moly is a must? TIA

The 14,500 lb static load rating is an axial load along the axis of
the
threaded shaft. The weakest point for this ultimate yield application
is the tension load that would fail (either deformation or failure) is
the end of the housing. However that is NOT the failure mode for
front
spindle heims, which are typically 1/2" for F500s. The failure mode
for
the spindle heims is causeed by bending from an accident or flexural
bending at the root of a thread. In this direction the absolute yield
is about 10% to 15% of the maximum axial load capacity. Look in an
Aurora catalog for these data. Heims that are in bending, (front
spindle heims that get suspension spring loads, as an example) MUST BE
CHROME MOLY heims. I have tried all the major manufacturers of heims
&
I HIGHLY recommend the use Aurora rod ends. They are your best
  insurance for the $$$.

I hope I have not confused anyone with this post.

  Thanks ... Jay Novak

Point taken but, the 1/2-20's have a static load rating of 14,500 lbs.
Although I'm not sure what direction that static load is applied it
seems plenty strong to me. I was just hoping that someone knew a shop
that would sell a box of 10 or 20 for less.

He doesn't carry chrome-moly in the 3/8-24's but the standards have a
  6,000 lbs rating.

  Thanks,

  Ron Madurski
